Oral Hygiene

Why is oral hygiene so important?

The term dental prophylaxis means the “removal of dental plaque, dental calculus, and stains from the exposed and unexposed surfaces of the teeth by scaling and polishing as a preventive measure for the control of local irritants.

Dental hygiene visits are the cornerstone of your dental health. While we are able to provide you with all sorts of complex dental treatments for advanced problems, nothing beats preventing problems in the first place.  When you have your teeth professionally cleaned regularly, you lower your risk of cavities, gum disease, and more complicated issues that can arise from progressed forms of decay and disease.  Early diagnosis of any dental problems allows for more conservative treatment.  We recommend that you come to The Broward Dental Rejuvenation Center at least twice a year for your dental hygiene visits.  We will clean your teeth, getting between them and below the gum line to clear away plaque, tartar and stain from those hard-to-reach spots.

A dental prophylaxis is performed not only to clean the teeth, but also to evaluate the oral cavity for any other problems that might be present.  The cleaning not only includes what you can see, but also the area under the gumline, which is the most important part.  Here is what you can expect at your next hygiene appointment:

  • A comprehensive examination
  • Radiographs (X-rays) as needed
  • Teeth cleaning
  • Periodontal (gums) evaluation
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Home care recommendations based on your specific needs

If it has been longer than six months since your last dental hygiene visit, contact our practice and schedule your next appointment!

  • Proper oral hygiene is essential to the success of any dental treatment.  Keep your teeth for a lifetime!
